The potential economic and social benefits of the autonomous vehicle are vast and wide ranging, however there are a number of challenges to overcome, from technology, infrastructure, regulation, ethics, and corporate governance.
Despite the powerful incentives, the potential of the fully automated level 58 vehicle has yet to be achieved. The technology is hugely advanced, but not quite far enough; the infrastructure necessary to support full potential of CAV’s has yet to be rolled out at the necessary scale; regulatory barriers and uncertainty hinder adoption and investment, and lack of standards inhibit both large scale roll out and trust in the technology by consumers.
